from rags to palace

i should probably write about all those adventures coming down here from bamboo land. travelling through the south of queensland, a rainy NSW and finally in to victoria.

should...but i don't feel like it just now. i might later and this blog can be a means of time travel rather that a cronological account of my life.

so right now...i am in melbourne. my thoughts the last week has been about homelessness. firstly because there is a lot of people forced into that situation due to the fires that have been raging the vicinity. On the drive here we drove through some scorched parts. Photobucket
secondly because as we were trying to find a more permanent accomodation we settled in the meantime to live in the park. each night after nightfall we would sneak around and find a good spot to camp in and before the most fanatical joggers arrived in the morning, we would pack up and leave no trace of our hobo lifestyle.

Cooking dinner at the old factory next to the pub where we broke down, lucky some furniture was already put in place for us:)

some mornings were harder than others to get up at 5.30am.

this social experiment taught me a few things; for instance how does one keep clean while living in such manner. Australia is a wonderful place in the respect that there are public toilets all over any city and these do not lock up at night. so that proved not to be a problem...what about showers you wonder...so did we and we walked around smelly until we figured out that you could actually go to gyms and only pay for a shower. however that does cost money so for the truly homeless person who has no cash....what do you do then? there are in places communual showers...lion parks around have free showers. haven't yet seen one of those in melbourne yet.

this lifestyle was quite tiring as you might imagine. mostly because you cart all you personal belongings on you at all times and it is cumbersome in the heat of the day.
by the way...goldie the goldwing motorcycle broke down just as we entered through the cityborders. i assume she is just tired and want to stick around for a bit. so we are meant to be here for a while longer.this is also why we trundled along by foot.

i am running out of time here at the library( even got a library card now that's how settled i've become) next time i log on i will continue the saga about how we have come to live like kings and queens in a palace. cheerio see you then!

so back to continue the story:
so how come two raggedy hobos came to live in a palace? I don't know really but this is how it happened.

as i started to mention last time i wrote Goldie died on us, we broke down just outside a pub which proved to be very fortunate ( as we found out, the whole social system is based upon the pub in Oz) After a few enquiries about being able to park the bike on their parking lot, people got curious about this huge bike that had shown up on their local turf, who owned it, where did it come from etc etc.
so when we finally thought to ask people at the pub for advice everyone wanted their curiosity stilled and a multitude of people tried to help us as best as they could. Incredibly friendly lot. one guy let us stay at his place for a night, another helped us being towed to the nearest garage, another got us in contact with the woman we are currently staying with.

she lives in a beautiful victorian home and we are living in her front bedroom. apart from being kind enough to take us in she has also cooked us gourmet meals and made us giddy on champagne.

it has been quite a break from being on the road and being homeless for the last little while. i have slept and slept and slept...so for all of you out there who believe i lead a very exciting and adventurous life all the time couldn't be further form the truth.:)

my new mode of getting around is a shiny pre-loved bicycle named bronco. there is a bicycle club at a local "hippie' hangout that i am thinking of joining. there i can learn how to tinker with bicycles and fasten some panniers and baskets ets on her. we have some grand ideas of continuing our travels via bike instead of the motorised version. it is still in the planning stage, no i am not crazy enough to think it feasible to cross the nullabor plain to perth...but perhaps crazy enough to cycle to adelaide....i've got to get more facts before i go ahead with this new project...i'll keep you posted.

soon i'll add some pix which will save me writing a thousand words allegely. it will have to wait though until i am at a computer who allows uploads.....(is that what they are called...when you put pix on the computer rather than downloading?)until then....all the best
